The United States is increasingly ostracized by the international community. It was re-visible when United Nations member states voted on United States President Donald Trump's claim to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on Thursday, December 21, in New York.
As a result, as many as 128 countries supported to reject the recognition. Meanwhile, 35 countries voted for abstention, 9 countries refused, and 21 countries voted against using the right to vote.
The nine countries that voted for the rejection were mostly from the Pacific island nation which in fact also supported Papua's independence. While Canada, Mexico, Philippines, and Poland chose to abstain.
The harshest perceived feelings of the United States came from the major powers that in fact were their allies, such as France, Germany, and Britain who supported that Trump's statement was not recognized internationally.
Unfortunately, although welcomed by the international community, including Indonesia, the resolution is non-binding. Then, what exactly is the resolution entitled 'Illegal Israeli actions in Occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territory'?
The text of the resolution was filed by Turkey and Yemen. Indonesia and several other countries have supported the text to be discussed at a special session of the UN General Assembly. However, in the text does not mention the United States specifically. They simply declare "profound regret for the recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem."
In the text also calls "any decision and attitude deliberately done to change the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem has no legal force, it is considered null and void and must be annulled in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolution".
